Tunnel
Mountain
- Canadian Rockies

Tunnel Mountain is
just a small peak in the heart of the Banff townsite.
In spite of this fact
it is still one of my favorite places to go, and I recommend it to
anyone who is in Banff to get out and walk up easy trail to the
summit. It only takes about 20 minutes to get there.
The day I took these
pictures was in March 2002, it was about 25 below zero and there were a lot of ice
crystals in the air. That sounds cold but the wind was not a
blowing.
The view across the valley was pristine and
peaceful, but on one warm summer day I had the pleasure of a private Shakespearian performance by some
very personable students from the Banff
Centre.

You may not be so
lucky, but because the hike is so short perhaps you could plan to
have lunch on the mountain. There's plenty of room on top. Take some
wine, cheese and a baguette and a blanket to lie on and just
luxuriate in the sunny warmth and diorama of the town.
To find Tunnel
Mountain just
head east from downtown Banff then turn right when you get to the last
street. Park where the road tops out, you'll see the trailhead and
parking. You can
also start lower at the Banff Center.
Have a nice hike! Oh...
and don't forget your climbing equipment.
